【Special Lecture Series for Members】Writer Naoki Inose on the Parallels between Showa 16 and Showa 100

I-House hosts Special Lectures for Members to foster interaction among members. For this year’s final lecture, we are delighted to welcome writer, House of Councillors member, and former Tokyo Governor Naoki Inose.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the centenary of the start of the Showa era.
This summer, a television drama about the Soryokusen Kenkyujo (Total War Research Institute) drew wide attention. The institute conducted war simulations in 1941, on the eve of the Pacific War, and concluded Japan was doomed to defeat.
The book that inspired it, Showa 16-nen natsu no haisen (Defeat in the Summer of 1941), was published in 1983 and has continued to be read for over 40 years. It was authored by Naoki Inose, an award-winning nonfiction writer known for meticulous historical research and for such works as Mikado no shozo (Portrait of the Mikado) and Nipponkoku no kenkyu (A Study of the Japanese State).
He continues to write prolifically, juggling his roles as a member of the House of Councillors and author.
At the upcoming lecture, Inose will discuss the situation Japan faces today, comparing it to conditions during Showa 16 (1941). He will examine why Japan rushed headlong into a war that it was destined to lose, what aspects of contemporary Japanese society remain unchanged from the prewar era, and what paths the country should pursue amidst intensifying international turmoil.
Please join us for the final Special Lecture for Members of the milestone year 2025, which promises to offer new insights into the world we face today.
