In addition to a 30-year career in finance, has been an angel investor for over 20 years, applying his entrepreneurial experience to actively support startups and participate in NGOs and NPOs. At Solomon Brothers, he became the youngest managing director in Asia, leading the proprietary trading division for Japan and Asia. Later, he founded Asuka Asset Management, a pioneering independent hedge fund in Japan, and Mercuria, a private equity investment joint venture with the Development Bank of Japan. As a hands-on venture capitalist, he helped launch Lifenet Insurance, Japan’s first online insurance company; SDG Impact Japan to promote SDGs through finance; robo-advisor company Money Design; and Recika to develop blockchain ecosystems. Is also chairman of crowdfunding platform Campfire, MNES providing advanced remote imagery diagnostic services, regional development company R Project, and Discover Japan magazine.
Is deeply engaged in the NPO/NGO sector, serving as representative founder of UWC ISAK, Japan’s first international boarding school located in Karuizawa; vice chairperson of Human Rights Watch. Received a BA in law from the University of Tokyo.
