Yasushi Watanabe

Profile
After graduating from Sophia University, he received his Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from Harvard University. He has held numerous academic appointments, including Senior Associate Member at the University of Oxford, Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Visiting Professor at Sciences Po (Paris), and Visiting Scholar at the College of Europe and Peking University.
His areas of expertise include contemporary American studies and public diplomacy. His major publications (in Japanese) include After America: The Trajectory of Bostonians and the Politics of Culture (2004), Libertarianism: The Supremacy of Freedom Shaking America (2019), White Nationalism: Cultural Backlash in the United States (2020), Culture and Diplomacy: The Age of Public Diplomacy (2011), Rethinking Culture: Toward a Concept of Cultural Security (2015), and What Is America?: Self-Image and Worldview in Conflict (2022), among many others.
He has received numerous honors, including the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities, the Shimizu Hiroshi Award from the American Studies Association of Japan, the Keio University Award, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Prize, and the Japan Academy Medal. He is also an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
