Overview
The 2026 Tokyo Plenary Meeting, under the theme “Era of Global Stewardship,” will address key issues at the intersection of geopolitics, technology, economics, and security. Particular attention will be given to the impact of emerging technologies—especially artificial intelligence—on the international order, including discussions on AI supply chains, democratic resilience, transformations in the financial system, and AI and security.
The meeting will also examine major international security challenges, including the stabilization of great-power relations, developments in the Middle East, and the situation in Ukraine. In addition, participants will explore issues related to sustainable growth, such as energy and climate change, scientific and technological innovation, economic security, and the restructuring of supply chains.
Reflecting the Tokyo setting, cultural perspectives—including Japan’s cultural and content industries—will also be highlighted, emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding among diverse values and societies. Through dialogue among leaders from across regions, the plenary aims to identify avenues for cooperation toward a sustainable and stable international order.
Message from James Masaakira Kondo
James Masaakira Kondo
Chair, Tokyo Meeting Organizing Committee
We are deeply honored that the 2026 Plenary Meeting of the Trilateral Commission will be held in Japan for the first time in fourteen years.
At a time of profound global change, the significance of global leaders gathering in Japan to deepen dialogue is immeasurable. Since the inaugural meeting held in Tokyo in 1973, this gathering has provided an important platform to address shared global challenges and explore pathways toward the future together. Our aim is to promote mutual understanding and strengthen close cooperation in response to the common issues facing the international community.
We very much look forward to welcoming you in Tokyo and Kyoto in May 2026.
