The provisional results of the First Japan-South Korea-U.S. Joint Opinion Poll were released.

About the Japan-South Korea-U.S. Joint Opinion Poll

Beginning around June 2025, API, EAI, and KEI jointly refined the survey questions and developed a shared questionnaire based on mutually agreed core items. Each institution then implemented the survey in its own country, with methods adapted to local contexts. The questionnaire covered topics such as perceptions of each country, economic and social policy views, and attitudes toward security and geoeconomic issues. All three surveys were conducted online around the same period in August 2025—API through its own channels, EAI through Hankook Research, and KEI through YouGov. The study collected a robust dataset: 1,037 responses from Japan, 1,500 from the United States, and 1,585 from Korea, for a total of 4,122 responses.

Project Overview

This project is a collaborative international public perception survey conducted by the Asia Pacific Initiative (API) / the International House of Japan, together with the East Asia Institute (EAI, Korea) and the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI, United States). The project aims to provide an analytical foundation for the increasingly important Japan–U.S.–Korea trilateral cooperation. By examining public perceptions, mutual views, and attitudes toward key issues across the three countries, it analyzes the current state of trilateral opinion, tracks trends in Japanese and Korean public sentiment, and offers policy implications. Japan-South Korea-U.S. Joint Opinion Poll, carried out in summer 2025, was API’s first-ever international public opinion survey. Following the survey, API and its partner institutions held a joint international press conference to announce the findings, published analytical reports, and organized roundtables with researchers from think tanks in each country. The project will continue to contribute to deeper regional cooperation going forward.
